Mrs Pearl Ann Timm Joining Dr Adrian Cole from the grandeur of the mountain country where she was born and many of her large family still live - Underberg - Pearl is well known in Port Alfred having managed reception at the Netcare Hospital here for many years. It is said she has met everyone who lives here and has more friends than is possible - but her thoughtful kindnesses have endeared her to our community and joining Dr Adrian Cole in June 2021 from Hospice will see her playing a vital role in serving the needs of our Community in Port Alfred.

Dr Adrian Patrick Cole Matriculating at St Andrews College, he enrolled at Rhodes completing his B.Pharm (Rhodes) in 1974. While doing his internship at Groote Schuur Hospital he applied for and was accepted by the UCT Medical School the following year and went on to complete his MBChB in 1980. Around this time he took up road running with dedication - completing some 40 marathons before his knees forced his retirement - but not before he’d completed the Two Oceans 9 times and Comrades 3 times. Clearly a student of the road too!

Later, starting a GP practice in Stutterheim he saw his involvement in community grow in leaps and bounds - Med Super at the Stutterheim Hospital, chairing the Amatola Haven Retirement Village Board and serving on the local High School board. Importantly he found a way to access Community Service doctors who served with him - two of whom rose to prominence: Dr Tracy Adams now head of Groote Schuur’s Dept of Gynaecology and Dr Langa Ngwena now practising surgery privately in East London - both outstanding examples of real progress in the New South Africa. Leaving Stutterheim in 2005 for East London he worked with Farmcare for 9 years before fulfilling his dream of returning to Port Alfred. He says “ I met Joy here - I’m back at last and here to stay - offering my services to the Port Alfred community!”

He married Joy Bayly while he was a medical student and says with pride that later this year they have been married for 40 years! “My strength and support all these years”, he freely admits. Professionally, he points to his early years at Frere Hospital serving under some outstanding doctors: Peter Comfort, Claude Schulz, Brian Ritchie and Stan Weakly all affording him a priceless grounding in his formative years.
